Adrenal fatigue, the syndrome of the 21st century

Updated: Feb 5, 2018

The most characteristic symptom of adrenal fatigue is a deep physical and mental fatigue that is not relieved by sleep or rest and that is accompanied by widespread malaise and depression. This Adrenal fatigue is considered as the stress syndrome of the 21st century

Conventional medicine commonly recognizes hypochondria or Addison's disease and hypermedia or Cushing's disease. Between the two extremes, fatigue of the adrenal glands can be found, which can occur with different degrees of intensity.

What is fatigue or adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a set of symptoms or syndrome that occurs when the adrenal glands function below their proper level and produce less cortisol than necessary.

It is most commonly associated with intense and prolonged stress, and may also manifest after acute or chronic infections, mainly respiratory infections such as influenza, bronchitis or pneumonia. The most characteristic symptom is a feeling of general malaise accompanied by depressive feelings. Often, people who suffer from it, must resort to coffee, caffeinated beverages or other stimulants to get going in the morning (one of the characteristics of adrenal fatigue is that cortisol levels are very low in the morning and very high at night, when the normal is the opposite). This reduction in adrenal function affects all the organs and systems of our body.

What is the function of the adrenal glands?

The adrenal glands are two. They are on top of the kidneys and are the size of a chestnut. They produce different hormones, among them adrenaline, cortisol which are hormones that are very present in the functions performed by our body in a habitual way. Cortisol, among others, helps the body to fight the stress that infections, traumas and extreme environmental conditions create, also acts on our emotional stability. That is why it is known as the stress hormone. An excess of cortisol will end up creating health problems.

Who can suffer adrenal fatigue?

Anyone can suffer adrenal fatigue supplements at some point in their life. An illness or an accident involving a traumatic or borderline situation, both physically and emotionally, can exhaust the supply of cortisol in our adrenal glands and lead to adrenal fatigue. Stereoscopic treatments can also trigger this process. It can occur at any age, although it is more common in the young and the elderly. It is frequent that it begins temporarily due to an event that triggers it.

Our body can recover and return to a normal state, or if the stress is prolonged and cumulative, it can become chronic.
